St Bathelemy or "St Barts"
Isle de St. Barthélemy is located at 18°N, 63°W, in the northeastern corner of the Caribbean Sea, 4400 miles from Paris, 1700 miles from New York, 125 miles east from Puerto Rico, and 15 miles southeast from St. Maarten.

It is small, a little more than eight square miles. Steep hills divide the island into several valleys, usually open on one side to the sea. Each valley is distinctive, with unique variations of topography, flora, density of settlement, and character of architecture. This creates the illusion of being in a much larger place.

The shoreline includes fourteen beaches of various sizes, all covered with gleaming white sand. Many are protected from ocean swells by a fringing reef; all, by law, are public and free. Several offshore areas are included in a Marine Reserve.

The climate is arid tropical maritime, which means that it rarely rains, and that year round temperatures range from 72° to 86° Fahrenheit.

There is one town, and a dozen villages, distributed more or less evenly over the landscape.

There are many hotels on St Barts but I have never stayed at any of them. There are 3 ways of getting there the first is a flight from St Martin, next is a charter boat from St Martin and finally the regular ferry nicknamed the vomet comet from Marigot in St Martin.

I know this thread is from June but I have not been around so I'll give it a whirl! We stayed at The Tom Beach Club on Plage St. Jean. Plage St. Jean in my opinion is one of the nicest beaches in the Caribbean. Just perfect with white sand, crystal clear turquoise water with every shade of blue and green in between and gorgeous palm trees. St. Barth is a very exclusive island that boast some of the most incredible restaurants and resorts around. This is not a concrete jungle with highrise hotels lining the beach. Eden Roc sits magestically on the middle of the bay while several full service condo style rentals stretch in either direction. We have considered staying at the Emeraude Condos but we booked from St. Martin and went with Tom Beach instead based on the local TA. St. Barth is one of my favorite places. We always fly over from St. Martin. It's a short and very roller-coaster like flight and landing in particular! The end of the runway brings you directly to Plage St. Jean, it's incredible!

We flew over for a day last week. I thoroughly enjoyed the flight but my wife was a bit on edge. We rented a car and after visiting several other beaches we ended up where we had started sur Plage St Jean. We had lunch on the beach and we spent the afternoon soaking up the sun on the west end of the beach. All in all a very nice island but terribly expensive.

My wife and I stayed there for two winters while working on charter boats thorought the area.. We have been to most of the Caribbean Islands and this little island is our favourite by far. Its far more enjoyable if you can afford it but even though its small its very cosmopolitan then even St Marteen with people and celebs from all over the world. Beaches are never busy and always fantastic to enjoy.
My choice for best island in the Caribbean.

We have been to St. Barts 3 times. We stayed at a great family run Hotel called the Baie des Anges, one of the top places on the island (Eden Rock) and in a private house. Very nice folks although knowing a bit a French helps. Some of the best restaurants in the Caribbean but very pricey particularly with a strong Euro. You have to want to get there as there is only limited air and sea access. If you want some specific help or suggestions, write me offline as we plan to go back perhaps in 2007.

I have never been to St. Bathelemy but it sounds like quite the place to vacation.

I like the idea of the climate being "Arid Tropical Maritime" (rarely rains) naturally, not because of a drought.

We have been there and it is beautiful but $$$$$$$$$. A beer and a cocktail was over $20 US and that was 4 years ago. Saw where David Letterman lives (that's what the driver told us) but Dave didn't come out and offer us a tour. Boat ride from St. M was a bit rough. A few people made use of the "B" bags on the ferry. We were on a beach and it was about a mile long and there was just my husband and I and 3 other girls farther up. Yes they were totally naked as that is the way it is. NO, we did not partake!
As said earlier, if $$$ are not a worry, GO FOR IT!
